Bluegrass CD appeals to a wide audience By Darren Sweeney The Burg dsweeney@newsadvance.com/385-5489 The debut CD from the Michigan quartet known as Chasin’ Steel is finger-pickin’ good. This group of bluegrass lovers, featuring a trio of brothers, proves it has the talent, and sense of humor, to appeal to a wide variety of music fans with the release of “Bluegrass On the Fly.” Jacob, Jonah and Jason Kuhlman collaborate with their friend, Adam Carpenter, to perform upbeat songs and ballads about love, fishing and heartbreak. Chasin’ Steel, supposedly a slang term for steelhead fishing, seems to be a perfect name for this group of avid fishermen and bluegrass pickers. The band has garnered some attention for the quirky song “Drink My Dinner,” with Carpenter spouting off all his favorite beers and vowing “I hope some day/I’ll be a winner/But ’til that day/I’ll drink my dinner.” Chasin’ Steel’s first CD features a rendition of the Johnny Horton classic “Ole Slew Foot,” written by James Webb and Howard Hausey, and includes the band’s arrangement of Jerry Reed’s “Eastbound and Down.” While there are one or two songs on this 14-song CD that tempt you to press the skip button, “Bluegrass On the Fly” is definitely worth a listen. For now, the CD can only be found online at the band’s Web site, www.chasinsteel.com, where you can also listen to three of their songs. J
