Jacob took his first banjo lesson at
the age of 9. At the age of 13 he began flat-picking a guitar after
hearing a Doc Watson recording. Upon graduating from Midland High school, Jacob also headed to the wilderness
of the Upper Penninsula, like his his brother Jonah, to attend Northern
Michigan University. He has since graduated with a degree in
environmental science. Jacob is currently unmarried with no children
(at least that he knows about).
Like the rest of the band, he enjoys
fishing in the rivers around the Marquette area in his spare time.
He is also an avid black powder enthusiast that hunts exclusively with
several of his flintlock rifles during firearm hunting season.
Jacob
has excelled at playing both the guitar and banjo. Especially
his banjo playing which has a unique
hard
driving bluegrass style and flare influenced by banjo legends Earl Scruggs, Bill
Keith and Don Reno. After Chasin' Steel was formed he began picking out
some melodies on the mandolin.
Jacob's extreme driving banjo tops off
the signature sound of Chasin' Steel .
Jacob also gives music lessons to
several students in the Marquette area.
